I Scream for Ice Cream

Leah turned eight and with our recent move to Hawaii, I wanted to make her birthday as special as possible. We decided to do an ice cream(her favorite food)/swim party(because we finally have one in our backyard). The decorations were the funnest part for me. I made pom pom flowers out of tissue paper and coffee filters. I also used the coffee filters to make an ice cream sundae with a red pom pom and brown pipe cleaner for a cherry. I had my parents send me about 20 IN-N-OUT hats. I covered them with scrapbook paper that I found to look like an ice cream parlor hats. They turned out really cute and the girls all wore them.

All of the girls were invited from her class and we started the party with pool games. With a bunch of screaming eight and nine year old girls in the pool it was very disorganized so I figured the girls rather just swim and play.
We served some ice cream and the girls got to embellish there ice cream with yummy goodies. We ended the party with a water balloon toss, which ended up in a fight and then opening up presents. After our guest left Leah's auntie and uncle came to diner with us to CPK. It was a great day for my little girl.

Two friends and I threw this baby shower for a dear friend last week. I got my inspiration from an invite form Pingg (they have a great selection of e-vites). Sailboats it was. I went to my craft room to pick put the color scheme for the shower and found some in my vintage stash. I used the fabric to make a pendant flag and as ribbon on the sailboats. I figured out how to make sailboats out of paper and decided to use brown paper bags from the market and sticks from outside for the pole. They were perfect to use as food cards. The table runner was burlap with a blue and white polka dotted ribbon down the center. Our guest each took home a sailboat shape sugar cookies with the quote “One if by land two if by sea, with love we welcome this baby.” Fun vintage handkerchiefs were used under the lemon water. It was fun seeing all the pieces of this shower fall into place.

I have been wanting to build a bench in my upstairs playroom since we have moved into our home 6 years ago. With much scared hesitation I did it. I really like how it turned out and the best part is it only cost me $40 and it hides all of the plastic boxes, but still lets the kids find what they are looking for.

I also finished the rain gutter book shelves. It was the easiest thing that I have done with such a great impact.

Added some great old wooden crates to hold books for my little one to grab. I also made throw pillows for comfort. The larger pillow was made by two dishtowels from Anthropologie. This is a great way to find fun fabrics and it will fit the size of a 16 x 16 pillow perfectly. The middle pillow was inspired by the lotus pillow from Anthro. Using all of the rement fabrics from my vintage fabric collection. The small pillow was just something fun.

Best Sugar Cookies

These have to be the best ever sugar cookies ever. I have made them several times and they turn out fabulous each time. The frosting turns hard(sounds kinda dirty) so you stack the cookies without them sticking (get your mind out of the gutter).

Sugar Cookies

Ingredients

1 1/2 cups butter, softened
2 cups white sugar
4 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
5 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt

Directions

In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Stir in the flour, baking powder, and salt. Cover, and chill dough for at least one hour (or overnight).
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Roll out dough on floured surface 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes with any cookie cutter. Place cookies 1 inch apart on ungreased cookie sheets.
Bake 6 to 8 minutes in preheated oven. Cool completely.

Frosting (I double the recipe)

Ingredients
1 cup confectioners' sugar
2 teaspoons milk
2 teaspoons light corn syrup (makes the frosting hard so you stack the cookies without them sticking.)
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
assorted food coloring

Directions

In a small bowl, stir together confectioners' sugar and milk until smooth. Beat in corn syrup and almond extract until icing is smooth and glossy. If icing is too thick, add more corn syrup.
Divide into separate bowls, and add food colorings to each to desired intensity. Dip cookies, or paint them with a brush.

The other day the kids were laughing in the front yard and yelling there is a Leprechaun on our house. I got excited hoping that he brought me a pot of gold or even a box of Lucky Charms would do. I came outside and sure enough I saw the shadow of a person smoking a pipe that looked like a Leprechaun.

I swear the kids and I looked for about 15 minutes trying to figure out what was the shadow was coming from. My 7 year old was convinced that it was a Leprechaun. Then we figured it out. It was the weird cactus that we have in our front yard that I refuse to cut down because it is so out of place it makes me smile when I walk by it.

These rosettes are just another beautiful detail Heather from Amorology had me make for a wedding she has coming up. After making them I was inspired to make a Valentine's dress for my little sweetie. The dress was made with red coudery with white with mustard lace on the sleeves and bottom of the dress with the rosette clusters on the waist made it seem like see walked off the set of Mad Men (if you haven't seen this show I highly recommend it).

What I have been up to

I have been wanting to remodel my kids/guest bathroom for quite some time now. The problem is money imagine that, so I decided to just redecorate. I am so happy with the end result. I made the shower curtin out of a sheet and green and coral fabric that I found at a discount fabric store. Since I have three little grommets I hung two towel bars with the letter of there first name above the towel with a coral drawer knob to hold the letter with a white satin ribbon. The little one has his towel hanging on the door (need to get him a towel bar). The towels are what to me is the best part of the bathroom. It is the new Amy Butler collection at Bed Bath and Beyond. Love it!!!

My little on is three and it is time. The thing we all hate doing as mothers. The task that is not fun and wish the kids would just figure it out themselves. Because really how many adults do we know that can't do this.

I have been home bound for three days and I have to say I am happy to be finishing new projects. I made a new design for a baby blanket and I new purse for myself.

Happy to be getting things done and to have no more diapers, but hate the process

Halloween

Halloween has become one of my favorite holidays. It is fun to come up with costumes with the older kids and forcing the younger one to wear one. Noah wanted to be a mad scientist. We came up with the 50 inspired lab jacket. I just used a p.j pattern shirt made it a little wider added some button, Velcro, rubber gloves, and of course eyeballs in his pocket. Leah was a lady bug. Her skirt was a no sew tie tutu of red and black. Wings that she helped me make. Black leotard, leggings, gray and black socks with black boots. Now Ezra I figured it was the last year I could make him be something. So he was the Travelocity Gnome. Red felt hat with a white fringe beard, blue shirt, black felt belt, and brown pants completed the gnome look. He didn't think that was enough so I made him a cape to make him a super gnome. I also made a hat for Jeff to wear, so Ezra would think it was cool. Thanks Honey for being such a good sport.

Aloha Leah

To incorporate the love of the beach and dancing Leah and I decided to have a hula party at the beach for her 7th birthday. The party started when all the girls arrived and picked a hula skirt to wear. Leah picked the fabric from my many years of collecting Hawaiian fabric. The flowers on the goodie bags were tissue flowers made to look like an Hibiscus Flower with a Cotton swab dipped in Mod Podge dried then pained yellow.

While we waited for the rest of the girls to arrive we did the limbo. The girls really got into it. It was fun to watch them try to get as low as possible.

My friend then taught the girls an traditional Hawaiian hula and then taught them a Tahitian dance. The girls caught on really easy and then took turns showing each other there moves. After dancing in the hot sun the girls decide to take a dip in the ocean.

When the girls finished there swim it was time to make carnation leis. Each girl picked 12 flowers and then started making them. The leis turned out beautiful and the girls looked happy to be wearing something they made.

We finished the party by singing happy birthday and opening presents. The girls then ate some snacks as they waited for there parents to come. The snacks included marshmallows dipped in chocolate, fruit skewers, cut up watermelon, Goldfish crackers, and homemade chicken nuggets.

Leah's party didn't end at the beach. When we arrived home her cousins where there and we had a dinner party for her. To continue the Hawaiian theme we had turkey meatballs with soyaki sauce from Trader Joes. Yum!! Then had ice cream cake after the kids all took baths and put P.J.'s on. HAPPY BIRTHDAY LEAH!

60 years of Love

To celebrate my Mom's 60th we decided to get the family together for a yummy Italian food and lots of love. My mother has done so much for everyone she knows we knew we needed to so her some love back. We started the evening at her favorite restaurant in Tustin, CA Roma D'Italia. The restaurant was very accommodating and gave us a nice corner in the back of the restaurant. Perfect for the table of grand kids. Each place setting had a bag of Whopper malt balls wrapped in red ribbon and a sunflower on top (my mom's favorite candy). On the kids table I found round up lollipops in red and pink. Coloring pages and crayons help also in keeping the wee ones occupied.

The center pieces had a birthday quote in it to celebrate birthdays and getting older. To finish the table off there were frames from Ikea spray painted red to match and pictures of my mom in them of thought out the years of her life.

The night went perfectly we had a great dinner and then had homemade lemon cake (another of my moms favorite).

Going out with a hit on the head

In my pursuit to be the best Mom ever I decided to take just my daughter and one of her friends on a girls day out. We had the day all planned. We would go get pedicures, then eat some yummy lunch, go to Color Me Mine, and then to finish the day off we would go take a dip in the pool. The day went perfect the girls had a blast. With tons of giggles and screams. Then at the very last second while her friends Mom was picking her up the girls decided to play in the backyard. That's when the day turned sour. Leah got hit in the head with the shovel. With tears in her eyes I rushed her to the E.R. She got the V.I.P. treatment with a room with a T.V., her very own soft pink stuffed bear, and a warm blanket she was very well taken care of. In a few hours we left the hospital with 4 stitches on her forehead. What a long day, but she did get Mom all to herself.

So I have found my new addiction. Simply dresses for my favorite little girl. This dress is from one of the patterns I purchased a couple of weeks ago. I changed some things around with the pattern and this is what I came up with. The dress and the headband took me about one hour to make. It was really easy to make. We had so much fun at Disneyland. The kids were on their best behavior which made the day very pleasant. We went with my Dad, Step mom, Sis Natalie, and Sis Kayla. Ezra meet Buz and it was the highlight of the day for him. I love that a place that made me so happy as a kid makes my kids just as happy.

On my day away from the kids I stopped by Joanna's fabric. I never get to sit down and look through the patterns and to my happy surprise they were 99 cents. I found this great pattern for a top, bought some fabric and went home to make something for my daughter. I added some of the fun vintage fabric and with a total of $3.00 Leah had a new dress and headband for church. Now for the reason why I sew. After I finished her dress she came to me with a little note thanking me. That makes all the hours I spend sewing so worth it.

I have recommitted myself to the blogging world. It has been one of those things (like alot in my life) that I swear I am going to do later and later now has become 5months. So lets start with the present.
One of my favorite things to do is to throw a baby shower. I love the fact that I am not the one pregnant and that a new little one will be arriving soon. My other favorite things are birds. I have been having so much fun making them and these little ones are so easy and fun to make (here is the pattern). I decided to combine the two for my friend Mindy. Wonderful food and good friends always make for a great time.

Raining Saturday

Blue and Gold 2009

I had a proud mom moment, when my son gave a talk to about 300 people at the blue and gold banquet. His Papa gave him a metal he received while serving in the air force and Noah talk about it. I think, actually I know I was more nervous then he was. He was so calm and did such a wonderful job.
The theme for the evening was "America." I had to decorate our tables for our pack(732) and make a cake. What a fun evening!

My husband was gone and it was 9:30 on a Sunday night and my kids would not go to bed. They had every excuse in the book to why they couldn't go to sleep. The over exhausted in need of a serious break me told them to get into my bed and watch T.V. After a few fights and giggles they were out in 30 minutes.
No matter how much kids drive you crazy, sleeping children always put a smile on your face and make you want to do it all over again the next day.

Forty reasons why I love my husband!!!!

My husband finally got his wish and we have a skateboard ramp in our backyard. He turned 40 on the 20th of November and of course we had a big party for him that night and then a week later the Big skateboard ramp building party. It was a lot of fun and I recommend it for all you ladies out there. The kids and the boys(men) stayed outside while us women got to talk. Happy Day!

Noah won a coloring contest at Trader Joes. He was so excited to win. The store gave him a speed racer lunch pail and sour jelly beans and he stood in the front of the store and they announced his name over the P.A. and everyone applauded. I was such a proud parent. Because I'm crazy and I always have to finish one more project before we go anywhere I decided to make dresses for Leah. I had one day we left for our yearly holiday to the good ole south. One of them turned out a little Laura Ingalls, but cute. The other one I thought, turned out really cute. The Little House on the Prairie dress is made out of vintage fabric from my step dad and the other one is made from the new Amy Butler collection and vintage fabric from my brother in law's grandmother. How cool is that telephone booth. It is in my in laws front yard. I think it is from England.

I made it through the first week of summer break. I remember my mom yelling at us for not being grateful for the fun things she tried to do with us. I hate to say it, but I now know what she was talking about. By the second day Noah and Leah were both grounded. I thought taking them to the beach would be fun. The beach, who doesn't enjoy the beach. The whole time we were there they complained. It's hot, I'm sandy, is anyone else coming and Leah's favorite I'm hungry. It didn't stop the whole time we were there. I finally had to tell them that this can either be a fun summer or a really horrible one. We can do fun things throughout the day or we can sit at home and clean the house and run errands. They were then both grounded. After that day they haven't complained. The thing that really upset me was that the whole week we went to the gym, then to swim lessons, came home ate lunch Ezra went down for a nap and then we would do something fun, the beach, swim at a friends house, or they had a friend over. I on the other hand haven't got anything done around the house. Next week, I'm going to try and get my kids to do more chores around the house. If anyone has suggestions, I would love to hear them.

Indiana Jones Birthday

Noah turned eight on Friday the 13th. Eight can you believe it. We were not going to do a party this year. Then Noah said he wanted an Indiana Jones party My wheels started turning. There are so many fun things you can do with this theme, but I was on a tight budget so I had to tone it down. First were the invitations.

Then planning how to do some sort of a scavenger hunt. The hunt started with the kids each receiving a homemade whip and a puzzle piece. The puzzle lead them to the Mummy Wrap. They wrapped each other in toilet paper and received another puzzle piece at the end of the toilet paper role.

Then they went to the forbidden forest, where the had to find a magnifying glass with more puzzle pieces.

That lead them to a ball toss game and the clue was at the bottom of the game which they could only read with the magnifying glasses. That clue lead them to the snake pit where they had to find flashlights and another puzzle piece.

That puzzle lead them to the spider cave where they used there flashlights to read the next clue.

By the way, it is impossible to find cobwebs in June. Thanks Karalea for the idea of using thin white yarn. The next clue lead them to crocodile river. They had to walk along the board and grab an airplane.

The boys then had to put the next puzzle pieces together and then throw there planes through the airport to the trampoline where the last clue was.

The last clue lead them to the playhouse where they found the treasure. The boys had a great time with the scavenger hunt.

The night didn't end there. They then came inside for snake surprise and chilled monkey brains.

After that we had pizza and cake.

Two of the boys had to leave, but the partying still wasn't over. Jeff set up a movie Theater in the living room with a projector from his work, a sheet on the wall, and my lab top. It was really cool. The boys had popcorn and as one kid said "candy heaven". They played upstairs and down and watched movies. Then about 12:30 a.m. after pillow fights and lots of giggles they went to sleep.

They woke up to donuts.

What a crazy birthday. My house is still trying to recover.

It has been so long since I have post any pictures of what I have been up to. What a crazy month. Do you ever look back at your month and think I was so busy, but what the crap did I do. Well May was a lot like that for me. I had to look back at my calendar and see what was up. As soon as i walked thought the door I heard Ezra crying, so of course I thought he got hurt. Ooh no he was crying because he wanted a turn on the skateboard. He is a crazy kid.

Legoland

Spring Break 2008

Hotels, good friends, and a little alone time covers how our spring break went. The kids and I drove up to Mindy's on Wednesday for our play dates. Noah plays with Ian, Leah plays with Finn (by the way Leah says that they are just friends, but they like to hold hands and he is one of her boyfriends) and Jane and Ezra just roam and play where they can. When we arrived we ate lunch and then in the car to Carl's Jr. for some ooohh so good chocolate chip cookies. We actually shared this time. We meet Katie and her kids at he park. I love the park the kids are happy and we moms can sit and talk. We loaded all the kids back into the car and went to go pick up some dinner and other little treats and back to the house for a haircut and fun conversation while the kids played and watched movies. Thanks Mindy. Thursday, we packed up the car again to go with Jeff on his business trip to lovely Lancaster, California. The kids had fun going to a hotel and swimming in the pool

I had fun trying to play catch up to my book club. I'm getting there ladies. On our way home Friday we stopped at a airplane museum at Edwards airforce base and walked around.

Noah came home and made a really cool Lego airplane. He amazes me with his ability to create things out of Lego's. Saturday was Jeff's trip to the donut shop with the kids and my trip to the grocery store to stock up the Fridge. We then packed up the car for the beach. It was such a beautiful warm day. Then back home for baths lunch and naps. Then packed up one last time. Drove to my parents dropped off the kids and Jeff and I speed off for some alone time. He got us nice room at the Hyatt.

We went to dinner and then some Pinkberry YUM and then to Phil's for some Kava.
Then it as off to see Katchafire. Jeff and I decided we are getting to old for concerts. I knew it when I saw a girl dancing with two guys and thinking does your mother know you are acting like that. Woke up the next morning in a dark hotel room to look at the clock and see I don't think I have slept in like that for a long time. We ate some breakfast and then picked up the kids.
We cam home and played in the backyard.
I can't wait for summer break.

"Love Tweet Love" was the theme for a beautiful wedding my talented friend Heather did. She gave me the challenge of making these birds one for the table cards and the two love birds for on top of the wedding cake. After they were done they definitely put a huge smile on my face along with a sigh of relief.

Here is a picture of tons of vintage fabric my wonderful step dad gave me form his parents garage. Thank goodness for frugal grandparents who save everything for a rainy day. I can't wait to make things out of all this fun fabric.

What a wonderful night. Karalea and Susan did an amazing job of suprising me. It took 33 years but it finally happened. Thanks to all of you beautiful ladies who came to celebrate the night with me. Love you all!
